CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY AND HEALING THROUGH SHOCKWAVE THERAPY
‘THE WAVE’ OF THE FUTURE
Also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy – is a safe and highly effective treatment for many musculoskeletal conditions – especially those involving the ligaments and tendons.
Shockwave therapy provides physiotherapists another powerful tool in their tool box of modalities. When many traditional methods of care have not been successful, clinicians all over the world have seen the most stubborn, chronic tendinopathies such as tennis elbow, rotator cuff, plantar fasciitis, adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) – respond beautifully. Studies have shown an overall 75-90% success rate for various chronic muscle and tendon conditions.
The treatment consists of the shockwave instrument generating and sending a wave or acoustic pneumatic impulse to the affected painful tissue area. This unique process effectively re-injures the tissue on a cellular level which then stimulates the body’s natural healing processes to heal and reduce pain.
How does it work medically?
- New blood vessel formation – necessary for repair processes to occur
- Reversal of chronic inflammation – thereby reducing pain
- Stimulation of collagen production – important for firm tissue regeneration
- Dissolution of calcified fibroblast – removes calcium build up
- Release of trigger points – these tight pain causing nodules
How long will it take?
Treatment regimens are typically of short frequency and duration. Depending on results, treatment is usually once per week for 5-8 weeks and lasts 5-10 minutes. The intensity is adjusted at all times for patient comfort. The treatment is non-invasive and of course non-surgical.
